A lovely imitation of a denarius of Trajan
Lot 1729
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Early 3rd to mid 4th centuries. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.23 g, 7 h), Taman Peninsula. Stage 1, imitating Trajan, 98-117. [...] Laureate and draped bust of Trajan to right, seen from behind. Rev. CONC [...] COS IIII Female figure standing front, head to left, extending her right hand towards serpent coiled around altar and holding cornucopiae in her left. Sergeev -, cf. 280 ff. A curious piece of lovely imitative style. Flan crack and with a flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, about very fine.

What makes this piece particularly interesting, apart from the lovely portrait, is the mixing of different attributes on the reverse and the fact that the legend is split into two parts, one of which starts inwardly on the left, the other outwardly on the right
